Ch 17Verse 3
Adhyāya 17 Shloka 3

सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत | श्रद्धामयोऽयं पुरुषो यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः || ३ ||

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati bhārata | śraddhā-mayo 'yaṁ puruṣo yo yac-chraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ || 3 ||

"O son of Bharata, according to one's existence under the various modes of nature, one evolves a particular kind of faith. The living being is said to be of a particular faith according to the modes he has acquired."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers one of the most profound psychological equations in the Gita. He states that faith (śraddhā) takes shape strictly according to the specific state of one's existence and consciousness (sattvānurūpā sarvasya). He then gives the ultimate summary: 'śraddhā-mayo 'yaṁ puruṣo' (man is made of his faith). Whatever a person's faith is, that is exactly what he is (yo yac-chraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ).
