Ch 17Verse 2
Adhyāya 17 Shloka 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच | त्रिविधा भवति श्रद्धा देहिनां सा स्वभावजा | सात्त्विकी राजसी चैव तामसी चेति तां शृणु || २ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | tri-vidhā bhavati śraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāva-jā | sāttvikī rājasī caiva tāmasī ceti tāṁ śṛṇu || 2 ||

"The Supreme Lord said: According to the modes of nature acquired by the embodied soul, one's faith can be of three kinds—in goodness, in passion or in ignorance. Now hear about these."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna immediately answers Arjuna's question by breaking down the anatomy of unguided faith. He states that the faith (śraddhā) of the embodied souls (dehināṁ) is not a blank slate; it is inherently 'svabhāva-jā'—born from their own acquired nature and past karma. Because material nature has three modes, this natural faith strictly divides into three kinds (tri-vidhā): goodness (sāttvikī), passion (rājasī), and ignorance (tāmasī).
