Ch 16Verse 17
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 17

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः | यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम् || १७ ||

ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ | yajante nāma-yajñais te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam || 17 ||

"Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules or regulations."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna exposes the fake spirituality of the demoniac. They are entirely self-complacent and arrogant (ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā), deeply intoxicated by their wealth and false prestige (dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ). When they do engage in religion or charity, they perform sacrifices 'in name only' (nāma-yajñais). They do this out of pure hypocrisy and pride (dambhena), completely disregarding any actual scriptural rules or spiritual regulations (avidhi-pūrvakam).
