Ch 16Verse 16
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 16

अनेकचित्तविभ्रान्ता मोहजालसमावृताः | प्रसक्ताः कामभोगेषु पतन्ति नरकेऽशुचौ || १६ ||

aneka-citta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛtāḥ | prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣu patanti narake 'śucau || 16 ||

"Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna reveals the inevitable result of the narcissistic monologue from the previous verses. Because their minds are violently pulled in a million different directions by endless desires (aneka-citta-vibhrāntā), they are completely enveloped in a dense web of illusion (moha-jāla-samāvṛtāḥ). Being hopelessly addicted and attached to sensual exploitation (prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣu), they naturally glide downward, falling into impure, hellish conditions of existence (patanti narake 'śucau).
