Ch 15Verse 2
Adhyāya 15 Shloka 2

अधश्चोर्ध्वं प्रसृतास्तस्य शाखा गुणप्रवृद्धा विषयप्रवालाः | अधश्च मूलान्यनुसन्ततानि कर्मानुबन्धीनि मनुष्यलोके || २ ||

adhaś cordhvaṁ prasṛtās tasya śākhā guṇa-pravṛddhā viṣaya-pravālāḥ | adhaś ca mūlāny anusantatāni karmānubandhīni manuṣya-loke || 2 ||

"The branches of this tree extend downward and upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature. The twigs are the objects of the senses. This tree also has roots going down, and these are bound to the fruitive actions of human society."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna adds extreme detail to the cosmic tree. The branches spread everywhere (upward to heavenly planets, downward to animal and hellish species). What acts as water to nourish this massive tree? The three gunas (modes of nature). The twigs at the very ends of the branches are the sense objects (sound, form, touch). Furthermore, while the main root is at the top (God), there are secondary roots extending downward (adhaś ca mūlāny), which are firmly bound and tangled in the karmic, fruitive actions of human society (karmānubandhīni manuṣya-loke).
