Adhyāya 15 Shloka 1

श्रीभगवानुवाच | ऊर्ध्वमूलमधःशाखमश्वत्थं प्राहुरव्ययम् | छन्दांसि यस्य पर्णानि यस्तं वेद स वेदवित् || १ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śākham aśvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam | chandāṁsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit || 1 ||

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is said that there is an imperishable banyan tree that has its roots upward and its branches down and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna introduces one of the most famous metaphors in the Gita: the upside-down Banyan tree (aśvatthaṁ). The roots of this tree are positioned upward (ūrdhva-mūlam), representing the spiritual world and the Supreme, while the branches extend downward (adhaḥ-śākham), representing the material universe. He declares this cosmic tree to be imperishable (avyayam) in its cyclical nature. The leaves of this tree are the Vedic hymns (chandāṁsi) that elevate one to higher planets. Finally, Krishna states that anyone who truly understands the nature of this upside-down tree is the ultimate knower of the Vedas (veda-vit).
