"I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most famous and comprehensive verses in the Gita. Krishna moves from the stomach (digestion) directly to the heart (consciousness). He declares He is intimately seated in the heart of every single living being (sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo). From Him alone originate three core cognitive functions: memory (smṛtir), knowledge (jñānam), and forgetfulness (apohanaṁ ca). Furthermore, He reveals the ultimate purpose of all scripture: across the entirety of the Vedas (vedaiś ca sarvair), He is the only object to be known (aham eva vedyo). Finally, He asserts His authority: He is the original compiler of Vedanta (vedānta-kṛd) and the ultimate knower of the Vedas (veda-vid).
