Ch 14Verse 7
Adhyāya 14 Shloka 7

रजो रागात्मकं विद्धि तृष्णासङ्गसमुद्भवम् | तन्निबध्नाति कौन्तेय कर्मसङ्गेन देहिनम् || ७ ||

rajo rāgātmakaṁ viddhi tṛṣṇā-saṅga-samudbhavam | tan nibadhnāti kaunteya karma-saṅgena dehinam || 7 ||

"The mode of passion is born of unlimited desires and longings, O son of Kuntī, and because of this the embodied living entity is bound to material fruitive actions."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna now describes the second rope: Rajas (passion). He states that passion is fundamentally characterized by intense attachment and attraction (rāgātmakam). It is born from unquenchable thirst, cravings, and longings (tṛṣṇā-saṅga-samudbhavam). How does it bind the soul? It ties the embodied entity down through a relentless addiction to fruitive work and endless activity (karma-saṅgena).
