Ch 14Verse 6
Adhyāya 14 Shloka 6

तत्र सत्त्वं निर्मलत्वात्प्रकाशकमनामयम् | सुखसङ्गेन बध्नाति ज्ञानसङ्गेन चानघ || ६ ||

tatra sattvaṁ nirmalatvāt prakāśakam anāmayam | sukha-saṅgena badhnāti jñāna-saṅgena cānagha || 6 ||

"O sinless one, the mode of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminating, and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna begins analyzing the three ropes (gunas), starting with the highest material state: Sattva (goodness). Because it is purer (nirmalatvāt) than passion and ignorance, it is illuminating (prakāśakam) and free from disease or sinful reactions (anāmayam). However, Krishna reveals a profound catch: it still binds the soul (badhnāti). It conditions the eternal soul through attachment to material happiness (sukha-saṅgena) and attachment to knowledge (jñāna-saṅgena).
