Ch 13Verse 32
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 32

यथा सर्वगतं सौक्ष्म्यादाकाशं नोपलिप्यते | सर्वत्रावस्थितो देहे तथात्मा नोपलिप्यते || ३२ ||

yathā sarva-gataṁ saukṣmyād ākāśaṁ nopalipyate | sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate || 32 ||

"The sky, due to its subtle nature, does not mix with anything, although it is all-pervading. Similarly, the soul situated in Brahman vision does not mix with the body, though situated in that body."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To illustrate the concept of being untouched (from the previous verse), Krishna provides a brilliant natural metaphor. The sky or ether (ākāśaṁ) is all-pervading (sarva-gataṁ); it holds everything—clouds, smoke, dirt, and storms. Yet, because of its incredibly subtle nature (saukṣmyād), the sky itself never mixes with or gets stained by the dirt it contains. Similarly, the soul is situated everywhere within the body, yet it never truly mixes with the biological elements.
