Ch 13Verse 18
Adhyāya 13 Shloka 18

ज्योतिषामपि तज्ज्योतिस्तमसः परमुच्यते | ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यं हृदि सर्वस्य विष्ठितम् || १८ ||

jyotiṣām api taj jyotis tamasaḥ param ucyate | jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ jñāna-gamyaṁ hṛdi sarvasya viṣṭhitam || 18 ||

"He is the source of light in all luminous objects. He is beyond the darkness of matter and is unmanifested. He is knowledge, He is the object of knowledge, and He is the goal of knowledge. He is situated in everyone's heart."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most poetic verses in the Gita. Krishna declares the Supreme to be the 'light of all lights' (jyotiṣām api taj jyotis), situated entirely beyond the darkness of material ignorance. Most profoundly, He defines the Absolute as the culmination of the epistemological trinity: He is the knowledge itself (jñānam), the object to be known (jñeyam), and the ultimate goal/destination of that knowledge (jñāna-gamyam). And this vast, cosmic truth is located right in the heart (hṛdi) of everyone.
