Ch 12Verse 1
Adhyāya 12 Shloka 1

अर्जुन उवाच | एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते | ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः || १ ||

arjuna uvāca | evaṃ satata-yuktā ye bhaktās tvāṃ paryupāsate | ye cāpy akṣaram avyaktaṃ teṣāṃ ke yoga-vittamāḥ || 1 ||

"Arjuna inquired: Which are considered to be more perfect, those who are always properly engaged in Your devotional service or those who worship the impersonal Brahman, the unmanifested?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna asks a direct, comparative question to resolve the ultimate theological debate. He says: Thus (evaṃ), between those devotees (bhaktās) who are constantly and perpetually engaged (satata-yuktā) in completely worshipping You as a Person (tvāṃ paryupāsate), and those who worship the imperishable (akṣaram) and the invisible, unmanifested void (avyaktaṃ)—out of these two (teṣāṃ), who is considered to be the most perfect and deeply knowledgeable in yoga (ke yoga-vittamāḥ)?
