Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna acts as the cosmic tour guide, directing Arjuna's newly granted vision. He says: Behold (paśya) the twelve Adityas (the solar deities), the eight Vasus (elements of nature), the eleven Rudras (forms of destruction), the twin Asvini-kumaras (celestial physicians), and the forty-nine Maruts (wind gods). O best of the Bharata dynasty (bhārata), behold (paśya) these countless, astonishing, and miraculous wonders (bahūny āścaryāṇi) that have never been seen before by anyone (adṛṣṭa-pūrvāṇi).
