Ch 10Verse 2
Adhyāya 10 Shloka 2

न मे विदुः सुरगणाः प्रभवं न महर्षयः | अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वशः || २ ||

na me viduḥ sura-gaṇāḥ prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ | aham ādir hi devānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ || 2 ||

"Neither the hosts of demigods nor the great sages know My origin or opulences, for, in every respect, I am the source of the demigods and sages."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna establishes His absolute primacy. He states that neither the multitudes of celestial demigods (sura-gaṇāḥ) nor the great, ancient sages (maharṣayaḥ) truly know or comprehend (na viduḥ) His origin or majestic manifestations (me prabhavaṃ). The reason is simple and absolute: He is the original source and beginning (aham ādir hi) of all the demigods (devānāṃ) and all the great sages (maharṣīṇāṃ) in every possible respect (sarvaśaḥ).
