"To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

In the magnificent conclusion to the Catur-ślokī (the four seed verses of the Gita), Krishna explains the final act of His grace. He says: purely out of unparalleled compassion and special mercy for those specific devotees (teṣām evānukampārtham), I, who am permanently situated within their very hearts and inner consciousness (ātma-bhāva-stho), personally destroy and annihilate (nāśayāmi) the dense darkness born of material ignorance (ajñāna-jaṃ tamaḥ). I do this by illuminating their inner world with the brilliantly shining lamp of perfect knowledge (jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā).
