Ch 1Verse 8
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 8

भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिञ्जयः | अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च || ८ ||

bhavān bhīṣmaśca karṇaśca kṛpaśca samitiñjayaḥ | aśvatthāmā vikarṇaśca saumadattis tathaiva ca || 8 ||

"There are yourself (Drona), Bhishma, Karna, and Kripa, who are always victorious in battle; and also Ashvatthama, Vikarna, and the son of Somadatta."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Duryodhana names his heavy hitters. Bhishma is the grand patriarch and unparalleled warrior; Karna is Arjuna's arch-rival; Kripa is the family priest and master of weapons; Ashvatthama is Drona’s son; Vikarna is Duryodhana’s brother; and Bhurishrava (son of Somadatta) is a mighty ally. By mentioning them, Duryodhana is visually checking his 'assets' to drown out the internal voice of fear.
