Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having been directed by Krishna to 'behold the Kurus,' Arjuna scans the battlefield. What he sees destroys his warrior resolve. He doesn't see an enemy army; he sees his family tree. He recognizes the very people who raised him, taught him, played with him, and married into his family. The battlefield transforms from a theater of duty into a site of impending domestic slaughter.
