Ch 1Verse 2
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 2

सञ्जय उवाच | दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा | आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत् || २ ||

sañjaya uvāca | dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṃ vyūḍhaṃ duryodhanastadā | ācāryam upasaṅgamya rājā vacanam abravīt || 2 ||

"Sanjaya said: Having seen the army of the Pandavas drawn up in military formation, King Duryodhana then approached his teacher (Drona) and spoke these words."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The war is about to begin. Duryodhana looks at the Pandava army and notices their strategic formation (Vyuha). Despite having a larger army (11 divisions vs. 7), he is unsettled. He immediately goes to Dronacharya, the military preceptor of both sides. His move is political—he wants to ensure the teacher’s loyalty remains with him.
