Ch 2Verse 6
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 6

na caitad vidmaḥ kataran no garīyo yad vā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ | yān eva hatvā na jijīviṣāmas te 'vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ || 6 ||

"Nor do we know which is better—conquering them or being conquered by them. If we killed the sons of Dhritarashtra, we should not care to live. Yet they are now standing before us on the battlefield."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna reaches a state of total Aporia (an irresolvable internal contradiction). He admits he no longer knows what is right or 'better' (garīyaḥ). He realizes that winning is actually losing: if he kills his cousins (the sons of Dhritarashtra), life will be unbearable and meaningless ('na jijīviṣāmas'). Yet, they are standing right there, armed and ready to kill him. He is paralyzed by a lose-lose scenario.
