Ch 18Verse 7
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 7

नियतस्य तु सन्न्यासः कर्मणो नोपपद्यते | मोहात्तस्य परित्यागस्तामसः परिकीर्तितः || ७ ||

niyatasya tu sannyāsaḥ karmaṇo nopapadyate | mohāt tasya parityāgas tāmasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ || 7 ||

"Prescribed duties should never be renounced. If one gives up his prescribed duties because of illusion, such renunciation is said to be in the mode of ignorance."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having established that duty must be performed, Krishna explains how renunciation itself can be infected by the three modes of nature. He states unequivocally that prescribed duties (niyatasya karmaṇo) should never be entirely abandoned (sannyāsaḥ nopapadyate). If a person gives up their fundamental responsibilities out of sheer illusion or delusion (mohāt tasya parityāgas), that 'renunciation' is declared to be in the mode of dark ignorance (tāmasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ).
