"Arjuna said: O mighty-armed one, I wish to understand the purpose of renunciation [sannyāsa] and of the renounced order of life [tyāga], O killer of the Keśī demon, master of the senses."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Chapter 18 is the grand summation of the entire Bhagavad Gita. Arjuna opens it with a highly technical request for clarification. Throughout the previous chapters, Krishna has used two words interchangeably: 'sannyāsa' (renunciation of work) and 'tyāga' (renunciation of the fruits of work). Arjuna, wanting absolute clarity before the war begins, asks Krishna to explain the distinct, separate truth (pṛthak tattvam icchāmi veditum) between these two concepts.
