Ch 17Verse 28
Adhyāya 17 Shloka 28

अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत् | असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत्प्रेत्य नो इह || २८ ||

aśraddhayā hutaṁ dattaṁ tapas taptaṁ kṛtaṁ ca yat | asad ity ucyate pārtha na ca tat pretya no iha || 28 ||

"Anything done as sacrifice, charity or penance without faith in the Supreme, O son of Pṛthā, is impermanent. It is called asat, and it is useless both in this life and the next."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes Chapter 17 with a definitive warning. Any sacrifice offered (hutaṁ), charity given (dattaṁ), austerity performed (tapas taptaṁ), or any other deed done (kṛtaṁ ca) completely without faith (aśraddhayā) is officially declared as 'Asat' (false, non-existent, or impermanent). Such faithless actions yield absolutely zero true benefit, neither in the next life after death (na ca tat pretya) nor in this current life (no iha).
