Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna defines charity in the mode of goodness (sāttvikaṁ dānaṁ). It has strict parameters: It is given simply because it is one's duty to give (dātavyam iti). It is given to someone who cannot or will not give anything in return (anupakāriṇe). Finally, it is given at the proper place (deśe), at the proper time (kāle), and to a highly worthy recipient (pātre).
