Ch 17Verse 11
Adhyāya 17 Shloka 11

अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिर्यज्ञो विधिदृष्टो य इज्यते | यष्टव्यमेवेति मनः समाधाय स सात्त्विकः || ११ ||

aphalākāṅkṣibhir yajño vidhi-dṛṣṭo ya ijyate | yaṣṭavyam eveti manaḥ samādhāya sa sāttvikaḥ || 11 ||

"Of sacrifices, the sacrifice performed according to the directions of scripture, as a matter of duty, by those who desire no reward, is of the nature of goodness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna categorizes sacrifice (yajña). A sacrifice in the mode of goodness (sāttvikaḥ) has two strict conditions: it must be performed according to scriptural directions (vidhi-dṛṣṭo), and the performer must have absolutely no desire for a material reward (aphalākāṅkṣibhir). They do it simply because it is their duty (yaṣṭavyam eveti).
