Ch 14Verse 10
Adhyāya 14 Shloka 10

रजस्तमश्चाभिभूय सत्त्वं भवति भारत | रजः सत्त्वं तमश्चैव तमः सत्त्वं रजस्तथा || १० ||

rajas tamaś cābhibhūya sattvaṁ bhavati bhārata | rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaś caiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajas tathā || 10 ||

"Sometimes the mode of goodness becomes prominent, defeating the modes of passion and ignorance, O son of Bharata. Sometimes the mode of passion defeats goodness and ignorance, and at other times ignorance defeats goodness and passion. In this way there is always competition for supremacy."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna reveals the dynamic, unstable nature of the gunas. They are not static; they are in a constant, violent state of competition (abhibhūya). Sometimes goodness rises by defeating passion and ignorance. Sometimes passion crushes goodness and ignorance. And sometimes, dense ignorance overpowers both goodness and passion. The material mind is a permanent battlefield for these three forces.
