Adhyāya 13 Shloka 25

ध्यानेनात्मनि पश्यन्ति केचिदात्मानमात्मना | अन्ये साङ्ख्येन योगेन कर्मयोगेन चापरे || २५ ||

dhyānenātmani paśyanti kecid ātmānam ātmanā | anye sāṅkhyena yogena karma-yogena cāpare || 25 ||

"Some perceive the Supersoul within themselves through meditation, others through the cultivation of knowledge, and still others through working without fruitive desires."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Recognizing that human beings have vastly different psychologies and inclinations, Krishna outlines the different authorized paths to achieve this ultimate realization. Some achieve the vision of the Supersoul (Paramatma) through intense, solitary meditation (dhyānena). Others reach it through deep philosophical analysis and the cultivation of knowledge (sāṅkhyena yogena). Still others arrive at the exact same truth through selfless action and duty (karma-yogena).
